Being born in Juneau as a half Tlingit Indian, half milkman/mail carrier, he was also raised part time up the river in Haines with his grandmother, where his understanding for his culture and people flourished through ancient stories told around the campfire, as well as from learning how to gather food and live off the land and sea. His respect for these lands and his ancestors continued to grow, as he learned the many canoeing techniques that his family has been using on these waters for over 11,000 years.
